Collector Car Definitions

ANTIQUE AND CLASSIC VEHICLE
Any "stock" vehicle over 25 years old with desirable collector characteristics, used strictly for hobby and/or collector car activities.

SPECIAL INTEREST AUTOMOBILE
A rare or limited production, low mileage vehicle 15 years and older, with desirable collector characteristics such as:

  • Convertible top
  • 2-door sports cars (very few 4-door sedans are collectible)
  • Unique limited production body styles
  • Low mileage (under 150,000 kilometers or 100,000 miles)

As many of these vehicles are often driven as regular-use autos, we must ensure that the vehicle is being used as a collectible.

MODIFIED CUSTOM CARS, REPLICARS & STREET RODS
Any vehicle that has been changed from its original manufactured or "stock" condition. This includes changes in engine or drive train which were not available in the original manufactured year, increase in horsepower, or custom paint and/or decals. Generally, safety-related modifications such as steering, brakes or tires and wheels are not considered modifications.

COLLECTOR TRUCKS
We recognize that older trucks are becoming popular collector vehicles and we do offer insurance on these. However, we are again concerned with the use of these vehicles and do not offer coverage on vehicles used for towing, hauling or camping etc..

FIRE TRUCKS
"Out of service" fire trucks over 25 years old that have been restored to show condition may qualify for our Hagerty Silver Wheel Plan. There are several factors that are unique to fire trucks. The size of these vehicles makes it difficult to secure proper storage. Usage is also a concern, such as passengers riding or hanging off the vehicle during parades, which make them uninsurable.

VEHICLES UNDER ACTIVE RESTORATION
We recognize that the process of restoring a collector vehicle is part of the hobby. We will offer coverage on vehicles that are being "actively" restored. Our main concern is with low valued vehicles that never become fully restored. The applicant must demonstrate that the vehicle is in active restoration by providing quality colour photographs, details of the restoration, and a current detailed appraisal may be required.

TRAILERS
We only insure two types of trailers on our plans:

  • Custom Trailer - small trailers common to street rods or custom vehicles typically designed to match the vehicle
  • Vehicle Trailer - designed to carry your collector vehicle exclusively.
